West Sea Coast Guard Inspects 26 Foreign Fishing Boats, Seizes 1

Protecting Fishery Resources and Maritime Sovereignty
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Superintendent Lee Myungjun), responsible for the protection of fishery resources and maritime sovereignty in the southern part of the West Sea, inspected a total of 26 foreign fishing vessels and seized one vessel over four days from the 25th to the 28th of last month.
According to the West Sea Coast Guard Agency on the 4th, the Mokpo Coast Guard Station and Gunsan Coast Guard Station actively exercised maritime sovereignty by conducting crackdowns on illegal fishing activities by foreign vessels within their respective jurisdictions.

View original imageFirst, the Gunsan Coast Guard vessel 3010, around 6 p.m. on the 25th of last month, conducted an operation targeting foreign fishing vessels suspected of illegal fishing approximately 187 km southwest of Eocheongdo, Okdo-myeon, Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do. As a result, one 127-ton pair trawler was seized on charges of inadequate entries in the fishing logbook.
On the afternoon of the 28th of last month, the Gunsan Coast Guard vessel 3013 also inspected six foreign fishing vessels approximately 148 km southwest of Eocheongdo. Of these, one vessel was issued a warning for inadequate entries in the fishing logbook.
Similarly, the Mokpo Coast Guard conducted intensive inspections of foreign vessels suspected of illegal fishing. On the 26th of last month, patrol vessel 3015 inspected a total of six vessels, including a 200-ton foreign fishing vessel, approximately 65 km southwest of Gageodo, Heuksan-myeon, Sinan-gun. On the 27th and 28th, a total of eight vessels were inspected in waters approximately 46 km west and 92 km northwest of Gageodo, respectively.
In addition, on the afternoon of the 26th of the same month, Mokpo Coast Guard vessel 1508 inspected four foreign fishing vessels, including a 100-ton pair trawler, approximately 68 km northwest of Heuksando. No violations were found.
Lee Myungjun, Chief of the West Sea Coast Guard Agency, stated, "Since a full-scale fishing ground was formed in the southern West Sea in October last year, we have been doing our utmost to crack down on and prevent illegal fishing by foreign vessels using patrol vessels and aircraft." He added, "The West Sea Coast Guard Agency will continue to actively crack down on illegal activities that devastate the West Sea fishing grounds and deplete fishery resources, which are assets of all our citizens, while also taking the lead in ensuring maritime safety and protecting lives."
