Sangsang Mok and Chungsang Lee Resign from Human Rights Commission Standing Committee
Choi Sang-mok, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, accepted the resignation letter of Lee Chung-sang, Standing Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the NHRC announced on the 21st.
The NHRC stated that Commissioner Lee is scheduled to be dismissed as of March 1 and that a farewell ceremony will be held on the 24th.
Commissioner Lee, a former judge, was appointed as a standing commissioner of the NHRC in October 2022, recommended by the People Power Party. However, he faced calls for resignation from opposition parties and civic groups due to a series of controversial remarks, and he expressed his intention to resign last November with about one year left in his term.
He was also subject to a special audit over workplace harassment allegations, but as political appointees among national public officials are not subject to disciplinary action, the matter was closed without any penalties.
