Korail "Multi-child Families and Pregnant Women Fare Discounts Benefited 400,000 People Last Year"
Last year, the number of users of the ‘Multi-Child Discount’ and ‘Mom-Pyeonhan Korail’ products exceeded 400,000. Compared to 2023, the number of users of these products has doubled. This is largely attributed to the simultaneous enhancement of product benefits and the expansion of the user base.
According to Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) on the 20th, the number of users of the ‘Multi-Child Discount’ product last year was about 207,000, an increase of approximately 94,000 compared to the previous year.
This product is a system that offers discounted train fares to multi-child families using KTX. Since introducing this product in 2015, Korail has continuously expanded benefits by raising the eligible child age (from 18 to 25), relaxing the multi-child recognition criteria (from 3 children to 2 children), and increasing the adult fare discount rate for families with three or more children (from 30% to 50%).
The Multi-Child Discount is one of Korail’s representative products operated in line with the government’s policies to overcome low birth rates and population decline, and the increase in users is interpreted as a result of expanding benefits.
The number of users of the ‘Mom-Pyeonhan Korail’ product also more than doubled. Last year, the number of users of this product was about 196,000, an increase of approximately 113,000 compared to the previous year (about 83,000). Notably, the number of users of the Mom-Pyeonhan Korail product last year recorded the highest ever since the product was launched 10 years ago.
Until now, this product has supported pregnant women by allowing them to use KTX first-class seats at the price of KTX economy class (free seat upgrade) when using the train. Additionally, last year, benefits were strengthened to allow pregnant women and one accompanying person to receive a 40% discount on fares when using economy class on KTX, ITX-Saemaeul, Mugunghwa, and other trains.
As a result, Korail explained that the average daily number of users of the Mom-Pyeonhan Korail product increased more than fourfold, from 300 to 1,254 last year.
.
In particular, starting from the second half of this year, Korail will newly introduce a designated seat system for pregnant women on KTX and regular trains, further strengthening policies for pregnant women. The designated seats will be operated in a way that only pregnant women can purchase discounted tickets until a certain point in time. The purpose of introducing the designated seat system is to ensure that pregnant women do not face difficulties in reserving seats even during weekends and peak hours when train demand is high.
