Lee Jae-myung and Kim Dong-yeon to Meet on 28th... 'Term Reduction Constitutional Amendment' Expected to Be Discussed
Lee Lays Groundwork for Regime Change Through Alliance with Non-Lee Faction
Kim: "Next President's Term Should Be Shortened to Three Years"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, will meet with Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, on the 28th.
Kim's side announced on the 19th, "Governor Kim and Leader Lee will have a meeting at 4 p.m. on the 28th. The location is undecided."
With this, Leader Lee will have met with all major non-Lee Jae-myung (non-Lee) faction figures within this month, starting with former Governor Kim Kyung-soo of South Gyeongsang Province. Previously, Leader Lee had a private talk with former Governor Kim at the National Assembly on the 13th. At that meeting, former Governor Kim said, "I believe we need to create a broader and stronger democratic coalition," urging the party to restore diversity and for the leadership to show inclusiveness.
Additionally, meetings are scheduled with former Democratic Party lawmaker Park Yong-jin on the 21st, former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum on the 24th, and former Presidential Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok on the 27th.
During the meeting with Governor Kim, a potential presidential candidate from the opposition, opinions are expected to be exchanged regarding the 'constitutional amendment for shortening the presidential term.' Previously, Governor Kim and Leader Lee agreed on a constitutional amendment to shorten the term by one year ahead of the 2022 presidential election.

View original imageGovernor Kim recently advocated for shortening the presidential term to three years. On the 17th, he appeared on JTBC's YouTube channel and said, "As President Roh Moo-hyun mentioned, the next general election and the following presidential election should be aligned in timing," adding, "Assuming there is an early presidential election this time, the next president should serve only three years and align with the next general election."
Leader Lee is emphasizing 'unity and inclusion' within the party through consecutive meetings with non-Lee faction presidential hopefuls ahead of the early presidential election. This demonstrates a willingness to form a coalition not only with the non-Lee faction but also with the pro-Moon Jae-in (Pro-Moon) forces for regime change.

However, some speculate that Leader Lee has started to control the non-Lee faction to manage judicial risks ahead of the second trial of the Public Official Election Act case. Political circles expect the non-Lee faction to expand their activities significantly following the outcome of Leader Lee's second trial election case.
