Yoon Jungmin, Gwangju Seo-gu Council Member, Calls for Establishment of Safety Measures for Electric Scooter Operation
Requests for Safety Education and Crackdowns on Illegal Parking
On the 11th, during the 328th temporary session of the Seo-gu Council in Gwangju, Council member Yoon Jungmin delivered a '5-minute free speech' regarding electric scooters at the first plenary session.
Through the speech, Council member Yoon highlighted the seriousness of illegal electric scooter operation and requested the establishment of accident prevention guidelines, safety education, and the regular enforcement of crackdowns on illegal operation and parking.
Taking the podium, Council member Yoon stated, "Regulations on electric scooter operation have not been properly enforced, while usage continues to rise, resulting in an increase in related safety accidents. We must establish safety measures and conduct thorough enforcement to protect the safety of our residents."
In particular, mentioning the occurrence of severe trauma accidents due to not wearing helmets, Yoon said, "It is urgent to raise awareness about helmet use. For the safety of teenagers, who are frequently involved in accidents, strong regulatory policies such as banning electric scooter operation and parking near schools or private academies are also necessary."
Meanwhile, in Paris, France, a resident referendum led to the withdrawal of the shared electric scooter business in 2023, and other European countries are also restricting the use of electric scooters. In Seoul, 'scooter-free streets' have been designated to limit electric scooter operation, and a pilot program has been in place since the 15th of last month.
