Choi Acting President Discusses Response to US Steel and Aluminum Tariffs
Choi Presides Over Meeting on External Economic Issues
Choi Sang-mok, Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister as well as Minister of Strategy and Finance, met with foreign and trade ministers on the 10th to discuss response measures regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum.
On the same day, Acting President Choi presided over a meeting on external economic issues at the Government Seoul Office in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Attendees included Cho Tae-yeol, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahn Duk-geun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Bang Ki-seon, Director of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, Sung Tae-yoon, Director of the Presidential Policy Office, and Shin Won-sik, Director of the National Security Office.
Acting President Choi reviewed the situation concerning President Trump's imposition of a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum and the mention of reciprocal tariffs, and discussed response directions. He also examined the trends of the U.S.-Japan summit held on the 7th and response strategies for key trade issues in the digital sector.
According to foreign media including Reuters, President Trump announced on the 10th (local time) that tariffs would be imposed on all steel and aluminum imported into the United States. He also mentioned that reciprocal tariffs would be announced around the 11th to 12th and would take effect immediately upon announcement.
