Government and Private Sector Collaboration Essential for Success
The National AI Computing Center will start its services this year and officially open in 2027.
The Ministry of Science and ICT held a project briefing session for the establishment of the 'National AI Computing Center,' which will accelerate the leap to becoming one of the top three AI powers (AI G3), on the 7th at the Bankers Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul.
The government plans to build the National AI Computing Center as the central axis of the AI transformation supporting the leap to AI G3. Advanced semiconductor-based AI computing infrastructure, regarded as the core of AI competitiveness, can bring about groundbreaking AI development by converging with outstanding talent and software (SW) innovation.
On the 22nd of last month, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced the 'Implementation Plan for the Establishment of the National AI Computing Center (SPC establishment)' at the 'National Agenda Ministerial Meeting and Economic Ministerial Meeting,' and has been accepting project proposals since the 23rd of last month.
The briefing session was held to increase interest in business participation from domestic and international companies and to provide detailed guidance. The session was co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Financial Services Commission, Korea Development Bank, Industrial Bank of Korea, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency.
From the private sector, AI and SW companies participated, including domestic and international big tech, platform companies, cloud service providers, MSPs, SI companies, domestic and international investors, the Super-large AI Council of the Software Industry Association, and the Information and Communication Promotion Association.
The National AI Computing Center plans to promote private infrastructure investment and respond flexibly to changes in technology and market environments. To this end, a public-private joint special purpose company (SPC) will be established to start services early this year and aim for the center's opening in 2027.
