Yeongyang-gun Operates Intensive Period for Preemptive Removal of Fire Blight Infection Sources in Fruit Trees
The Agricultural Technology Center of Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongbuk, is operating an intensive period for the pre-removal of fire blight infection sources from the 13th of this month until April 25th.
During this period, the Agricultural Technology Center will conduct continuous surveillance of apple and pear orchards within the jurisdiction, and if infection sources are found, they will be immediately removed in advance.
In addition, they are making every effort to block fire blight through education on fire blight prevention practices and promotion of the revised fire blight surveillance and control guidelines.
In particular, according to the newly revised fire blight surveillance and control guidelines, it has become mandatory for farmers and farm workers to complete prevention education. If they do not receive education or violate prevention rules, compensation payments will be reduced, following reduction criteria such as ‘failure to report occurrence (60%)’, ‘failure to complete education (20%)’, and ‘failure to apply preventive chemicals (10%)’.
The fire blight bacteria overwinter in ulcerated areas during winter, and in spring, the pathogens can spread from these ulcerated areas. Since fire blight spreads rapidly and there is no treatment chemical, it is important to thoroughly remove ulcers to prevent significant damage.
