Preliminary Candidate Sites Selected for Relocation of Five Military Units, Including Army’s 2nd Operations Command
Daegu City’s preliminary candidate sites for the relocation of military units have been selected as Gunwi-gun in Daegu City, and Sangju and Yeongcheon City in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
On the afternoon of the 20th, the Ministry of National Defense held the ‘Daegu Military Unit Relocation Preliminary Candidate Site Selection Review Committee’ and announced on the 21st that these sites were selected as preliminary candidates for the relocation of military units in Daegu City. The Daegu military unit relocation project involves relocating five military units within Daegu Metropolitan City: the Army’s 2nd Operations Command, 50th Division Command, 5th Logistics Support Command, Air Force’s 1st Missile Defense Brigade, and the Air Defense Artillery School.
Earlier, in September 2022, Daegu City solicited local governments interested in hosting military units and requested preliminary consultations with the Ministry of National Defense regarding the relocation of military units. The project officially commenced when the Ministry of National Defense and Daegu City signed a memorandum of understanding in December 2023 to agree on a civilian-military win-win cooperation plan related to the relocation of military units.
To select the optimal relocation candidate sites, the Ministry of National Defense evaluated the feasibility of mission execution and residential environment in the first phase. The evaluation results showed that Gunwi-gun, Sangju City, and Yeongcheon City were assessed as suitable for mission execution by function (operations, logistics, welfare, etc.) and effective training. Although there was little difference in residential environment among the candidate sites, when evaluated by the same indicators, Gunwi-gun, Sangju City, and Yeongcheon City scored higher than the national average.

The final relocation candidate site will be selected by Daegu City based on project feasibility and acceptability. The Ministry of National Defense stated, "The Ministry of National Defense and Daegu Metropolitan City will continue to seek ways for civilian and military sectors to coexist more harmoniously to strengthen national security and promote regional development."
