Gwangju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Bang Se-hwan) announced on the 17th that it will relax the designation criteria for ‘Alley-type Shopping Districts’ to strategically foster alleyway commercial areas and revitalize local commercial districts.
Last year, Gwangju City completed prior consultations with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to relax the designation criteria for ‘Alley-type Shopping Districts’ as well as the ‘Ordinance for the Promotion of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts in Gwangju City.’
Once the partial amendment to the ‘Ordinance for the Promotion of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts in Gwangju City’ passes the plenary session of the next month’s extraordinary council meeting, the designation criteria for alley-type shopping districts will be relaxed from the existing ‘30 stores within an area of 2,000㎡ or less’ to ‘at least 25 small business stores within 2,000㎡ in commercial areas and at least 20 small business stores within 2,000㎡ in non-commercial areas.’
The requirement to submit consent documents from landowners and building owners when applying for designation as an ‘Alley-type Shopping District’ will also be removed to promote focused development of these districts.
Gwangju City plans to revitalize commercial districts by intensively fostering alleyway commercial areas through the expansion of new ‘Alley-type Shopping District’ designations. Once designated as an alley-type shopping district, businesses can apply to join the Onnuri Gift Certificate program and participate in facility and management modernization projects.
Places where Onnuri Gift Certificates can be used within the city include Gyeongan Market and Gyeongan Angil Shopping District. In celebration of the Lunar New Year holiday, a refund event for Onnuri Gift Certificates will be held from the 23rd to the 27th.
During the event period, customers who purchase agricultural, livestock, or marine products worth 34,000 KRW or more at traditional markets will receive a 10,000 KRW refund, and those who purchase 60,700 KRW or more will receive a 20,000 KRW refund, with a maximum refund of 20,000 KRW per person.
