CJ CheilJedang Completes LCA for 7 Sites in 5 Countries... "Expanding Low-Carbon Product Development"
Calculating Environmental Impact from Raw Material Procurement to Disposal
Including Taste & Rich, Lysine, Tryptophan, and More
CJ CheilJedang accelerates global sustainable management (ESG) by completing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) across major business sites in its BIO division.
On the 15th, CJ CheilJedang announced that it has established an LCA calculation process for 41 products produced at seven business sites across five countries (USA, Brazil, Indonesia, China, Malaysia) and completed third-party validity evaluation. This is the first case in the domestic food and green bio industry to receive LCA verification at the business site level rather than for a single product.
LCA quantifies the materials and energy input and waste emissions throughout the entire process from raw material procurement to product manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal to calculate environmental impact. The third-party validity evaluation was conducted by DNV, a global energy and environmental certification body. DNV performed the validity assessment based on key environmental impact indicators such as climate change and resource depletion for each product’s “cradle-to-gate” process according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.
The verified products include the next-generation seasoning material Taste & Rich (TnR), produced using a differentiated natural fermentation method, as well as feed amino acids such as lysine, tryptophan, and arginine. In particular, for feed amino acids, reliable data can be provided by complying with the LCA calculation guidelines developed by the European Union (EU), which is strengthening environmental regulations. Through this LCA validity evaluation, CJ CheilJedang plans to proactively respond to the needs of global customers who prioritize sustainable management and further solidify its position in the global green bio market.

A program to support customers’ ESG management is also under development. The goal is to enhance technical marketing capabilities by utilizing ‘BIOFEED,’ a program that integrates feed formulation and carbon footprint management. Yoon Seok-hwan, head of CJ CheilJedang’s BIO division, said, “We have continued efforts to create a sustainable green bio market, including securing production technology capable of mass-producing amino acids through eco-friendly methods,” adding, “Going forward, we will expand the development of low-carbon products based on an internationally standardized LCA system and work harder to reduce emissions.”
