The Health Administration Division of Yeoju City, Gyeonggi Province (Director An Seonsuk) announced on the 14th that respiratory infectious diseases common in winter, such as influenza (flu), COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, have all been simultaneously increasing over the past four weeks.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of flu patients has been steadily rising over the past four weeks, reaching 73.9 per 1,000 people as of the end of December 2024, which is more than a tenfold increase compared to three weeks ago. In the first week of this year, the number of suspected influenza cases peaked at 99.8 per 1,000 people, the highest since 2016.
Choi Youngseong, director of the Yeoju Public Health Center, stated, “Various respiratory infectious diseases are currently on the rise, and with the large-scale movement during the Lunar New Year holidays, there is concern about mass outbreaks. It is important to follow personal hygiene rules such as handwashing, practicing proper cough etiquette, and wearing masks, as well as getting vaccinated to prevent influenza and other diseases.”
