Suncheon City to Provide Basic Allowance of 200,000 Won per Month for Newborns
Payments Begin for Those Born in January 2024
Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that it will provide a basic birth allowance of 200,000 KRW per month starting January 2025 to overcome the low birthrate crisis.
This policy was established through a joint agreement between Jeollanam-do and Suncheon City, reflecting the actual demand for childcare and education expenses.
The support is available to households with children born on or after January 1, 2024, who have registered their birth in Jeollanam-do and where both the newborn and guardian have their resident registration addresses in Suncheon and continue to reside there. Regardless of income level, children born in 2024 who turn one year old are also eligible for the support.
The support amount will be provided monthly, with Suncheon City and Jeollanam-do each contributing 100,000 KRW, totaling 200,000 KRW per month.
Applications can be submitted either by visiting the local administrative welfare center in the newborn's resident registration area one month before the child turns one year old, or online through Government24.
Meanwhile, the city is implementing various policies to address the low birthrate issue, including: ▲Birth encouragement grants of 5 million KRW for the first child, 10 million KRW for the second, 15 million KRW for the third, and 20 million KRW for the fourth and subsequent children ▲Postpartum care expenses (1 million KRW) ▲First Meeting Voucher (3 million KRW) ▲Childcare product purchase support (500,000 KRW) ▲Herbal medicine support (400,000 KRW) ▲Child allowance (100,000 KRW per month) ▲Parental allowance (1 million KRW), as well as ▲25 types of cultural and welfare benefits and other diverse birth and childcare support policies.
