The Nation's Only Public 'Gurip Kkumdeohagi School' for Youth with Developmental Disabilities
All 4 Graduates of the High School Program Take Hopeful First Steps as Members of Society
Providing Diverse Experiences through Customized Education Including Regular Curriculum, Career & Specialized Training, and Creative Activities
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that all four graduates of the 2024 academic year Dream Plus School high school program have achieved the great success of employment and university admission.
‘Dream Plus School’ is a district-run alternative educational institution for youth with developmental disabilities, specially operated by the district to guarantee the educational rights of disabled youth. Currently, 18 middle and high school students with developmental disabilities are enrolled locally, and through customized education tailored to each student’s characteristics and abilities, the school supports their growth into healthy members of society.
The four graduates of the 2024 academic year each succeeded in employment and admission as follows: ▲an orchestra member at Com2us subsidiary Com2us With ▲an actor in the musical troupe ‘Rahap’ ▲officially selected trainee at the Southern Developmental Disability Training Center ▲and a university student in the Able Art Department at Hyupsung University, taking their first steps toward a bright future.
Student A, who initially had a strong resistance to deviating from established patterns, expanded their range of behaviors by participating in various stimulating activities such as drum classes and sensory motor classes under the steady guidance and accompaniment of a special education teacher. As a result of these efforts, Student A was hired as an orchestra member.
Student B had difficulties performing regular tasks and maintaining long periods of concentration, but by experiencing various tasks at several vocational rehabilitation facilities for the disabled with their homeroom teacher, they developed adaptability. Consequently, at the final job training site, they even received an offer stating, “We want to hire you immediately.”
Student C, who hoped to enter university, thoroughly prepared for the entrance process with a special education teacher by researching the university’s educational goals and personally drafting anticipated interview questions. After more than three months of mock interviews, Student C received praise during the actual interview for “confident and fluent answers,” celebrating the joy of acceptance.
Dream Plus School offers students various experiences beyond the regular curriculum of Korean, English, and math, including ▲career and specialized subjects ▲creative experiential activities ▲and the after-school program ‘Young · Teuk · Han Neulbom School’.
In particular, based on the ‘Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P)’ which covers basic subjects and life guidance, the school continuously enhanced students’ personal abilities by providing year-round personalized career consulting and field training for high school students.
Additionally, through ongoing consultations with guardians at least twice a year, the school systematically supported students in preparing for their post-graduation careers.
