According to the Gwangju Uchi Park Management Office on the 27th, the ostrich couple has settled into their new home at the zoo and has been greeting visitors since the 26th. It has been seven years since ostriches were last seen at Uchi Zoo, with the previous occasion being in 2017.
This ostrich couple was previously raised by a private individual at a nearby farm, but due to unsuitable conditions for keeping them outside of a zoo, they had nowhere else to go.
Uchi Park provides a new home for animals with permanent disabilities or those who have lost their place after being raised in captivity. By serving as a safe and comfortable sanctuary, the park fulfills its role in promoting animal welfare.
Accordingly, the Uchi Park Management Office volunteered to become the new home for the ostrich couple and received them as a donation from the nearby farm.
The ostrich couple, who are three years apart in age, are known for their gentle personalities and close bond, and are expected to bring happiness and warmth to visitors.
Seong Changmin, head of the Gwangju Uchi Park Management Office, said, "I hope that meeting the ostriches after such a long time will bring great happiness to citizens," and added, "We will continue to work hard to create an ecological environment where animals can live comfortably and to become a zoo that promotes animal welfare."
