Israel Extends National Emergency for One Year... Until December 25 Next Year
Israel has extended the national state of emergency for one more year until December 25 next year.
On the 24th (local time), according to local media such as the daily Times of Israel, in the vote on the extension of the national state of emergency by the Israeli Knesset (parliament), 29 out of 120 members voted in favor, and 7 voted against. The rest abstained or were absent.
During the national state of emergency, the executive branch can issue decrees that take precedence over the Knesset's legislative authority.
Israel declared a national state of emergency after the outbreak of the Gaza Strip war following a surprise attack by the Palestinian armed faction Hamas on October 7 last year. It was extended for six months in May.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a Christmas message to Christians around the world on the same day. Prime Minister Netanyahu said, "At this time when Israel is fighting on seven fronts, I deeply appreciate the unwavering support of Christian friends worldwide," and added, "The fight against the forces of evil and tyranny led by Israel is not over yet."
