Gwangju G-Pass to Be Fully Implemented Starting January 1 Next Year
Free for Children, Half Price for Youth
50% Refund for Seniors, 64% Refund for Low-Income Groups
The 'Gwangju G-Pass' (Gwangju-type public transportation fare support), which provides discounts and reimbursements to all Gwangju citizens, will be officially implemented starting January 1 next year.
Children in Gwangju will be able to use public transportation for free, and teenagers at half price. Seniors and low-income individuals will receive a 50% and 64% discount, respectively, by combining the existing K-Pass reimbursement with the additional Gwangju G-Pass discount.
According to the city of Gwangju on the 19th, starting next year, fares for city buses, village buses, and urban rail will be discounted?free for children, half price for teenagers?and, in connection with the K-Pass, young adults will be reimbursed 30%, adults 20%, seniors 50%, and low-income individuals 64%.
Free rides for children, half-price for teenagers, and reimbursements of 50% for seniors and 64% for low-income individuals are unique features of the Gwangju G-Pass.
Children (ages 6-12) and teenagers (ages 13-18) can purchase a transportation card at convenience stores and register their date of birth, or continue using their existing child/teen transportation card. Starting next year, as soon as they tap their card on the terminal, children will receive a 100% discount and teenagers a 50% discount. However, rural buses operated by adjacent cities and counties such as Naju, Damyang, Hwasun, Hampyeong, and Jangseong are excluded from this support, even if they operate within Gwangju city. The child/teen discount is limited to one card per person. If multiple people board with one card, only the cardholder receives the discount, and the rest must pay the full fare without a transportation card.
Adults aged 19 and over can receive additional reimbursement in connection with the K-Pass. After receiving a K-Pass card and registering as a member on the K-Pass website, adults who use public transportation at least 15 times a month will be reimbursed a certain percentage of their expenses for up to 60 rides the following month.
The reimbursement rates are 30% for young adults (ages 19-39), 20% for general adults (ages 40-64), 50% for seniors (ages 65 and over), and 64% for low-income individuals (basic livelihood recipients and near-poor). Compared to the K-Pass, the age range for young adults has been expanded from 34 to 39, the reimbursement rate for seniors increased from 20% to 50%, and for low-income individuals from 53% to 64%.
The reimbursement process is also simple. Gwangju citizens already using the K-Pass will automatically receive the additional Gwangju G-Pass reimbursement if they use public transportation at least 15 times a month as before.
Kim Seokwoong, Director of the Integrated Airport and Transportation Bureau, said, "The Gwangju G-Pass strengthens support for future generations and socially disadvantaged groups, and is being promoted in connection with the K-Pass to make it more convenient for citizens." He added, "With the launch of the Gwangju G-Pass next year, we hope citizens will use public transportation more conveniently and affordably, and join in transforming the city into one centered on public transportation, bicycles, and walking."
