Hwaseong-si Designates 'Children's Food Safety Protection Zone' Around 'Dongtan 11-ja Shopping Area'
Strengthened Safety and Hygiene Inspections in Areas Dense with Various Academies and Snack Bars
Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 19th that it has pilot-designated the area around 'Dongtan 11ja Shopping Street' in Yeongcheon-dong, a district densely packed with academies in Dongtan New Town, as a 'Children's Food Safety Protection Zone.'
The area designated as a Children's Food Safety Zone this time is a representative academy-dense area within Dongtan New Town, home to 22 math academies, 15 foreign language academies, 5 arts and physical education academies, and 27 other subject academies. Because of this, there are a total of 49 establishments handling children's favorite foods, such as snack bars, bakeries, and convenience stores selling gimbap, tteokbokki, hamburgers, pizza, fried foods, bread, and beverages, which are frequently used by students in this area.

The city designated this area as a 'Children's Food Safety Protection Zone' to actively respond to recent consecutive food safety incidents involving children. Previously, the Bongdam academy district was also designated as a Children's Food Safety Protection Zone for the same reason.
Currently, Hwaseong City has a total of 133 locations designated as Children's Food Safety Protection Zones. In these designated areas, the sale of foods harmful to children's health, such as emotionally disturbing foods and substandard foods, is prohibited, and inspections are conducted by dedicated managers for children's favorite foods and food hygiene inspectors.
The city plans to strengthen inspections and crackdowns on Children's Food Safety Protection Zones regarding ▲ hygiene management of food and cooking sales facilities ▲ unauthorized (unreported) businesses ▲ use and sale of expired products ▲ compliance with storage and distribution standards for refrigerated and frozen products ▲ sale of foods that harm children's emotional well-being ▲ health examinations of food handlers.
