Gwangju City, Ecological Restoration of Balsan Park 'Back to Citizens'
Ministry of Environment Secures 6 Billion KRW for 'Urban Ecological Corridor Restoration Project'
Creating Ecological Learning and Rest Areas... Completion by 2027
Gwangju Seo-gu Balsan Park, which had been left as an eyesore in the city center, will be reborn as an ecological forest and return to the citizens.
On the 13th, Gwangju City announced that Balsan Neighborhood Park was finally selected for the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Urban Ecological Axis Restoration Project,’ securing a total project budget of 6 billion KRW, including 4.2 billion KRW in national funding.
Balsan Park was designated as an urban park in 1967 but is one of the long-term unexecuted urban parks that had not been developed for over 50 years. As a result, most of the Balsan Park site suffered severe soil contamination due to green space destruction, cultivation, and illegal dumping, and its landscape was poor, leading it to be criticized as an ‘eyesore in the city center.’
The Balsan Park restoration project will proceed on 94,661㎡ of the total 107,047㎡ area, excluding the parts already developed as a park. The city will begin design work next year and carry out the restoration project until 2027.
The city plans to restore Balsan Park not just as a simple green space but as a central axis of the urban ecosystem, providing citizens with a pleasant green environment and an ecological space rich in biodiversity. The project will restore damaged areas and habitats, connect fragmented ecological axes, and create spaces for ecological learning and citizen relaxation.
The city aims to make this Balsan Ecological Axis restoration project a model case for urban ecosystem restoration and develop Gwangju into a sustainable ecological city in harmony with the environment.
