View original imageGoogle, the world's largest search engine, announced the '2024 Year in Search' list. The Searches of the Year are selected based on search terms that domestic and international users paid more attention to on Google compared to the previous year. It is explained that this does not represent absolute search volume rankings, but rather terms that showed a significant increase in search volume in 2024 compared to the previous year while receiving considerable interest.
In South Korea, the overall 2nd place in the 'Searches of the Year' was 'martial law'.
According to Google Trends search data, the words with the largest increase in domestic search volume over the week from the 2nd to the 9th were 'martial law' and 'Yoon Seok-yeol'. Each of these terms was searched over 500,000 times within a week. This represents a staggering 1000% increase compared to normal search volumes.
Additionally, among the 25 words with the greatest increase, 15 were directly related to the emergency martial law situation or impeachment. 'Impeachment' was searched over 200,000 times, 'Kim Yong-hyun' and 'Han Dong-hoon' were each searched about 100,000 times, and 'Chu Kyung-ho' and 'Kim Kun-hee' were each searched about 50,000 times. As more people brought light sticks to impeachment-related rallies, searches for 'light stick' also increased by 200%. This is interpreted as a significant rise in searches related to unexpected political turmoil.
The overall 1st place in South Korea's Searches of the Year was 'Olympics & Paralympics'. Following that, 3rd place was 'housing subscription', 4th was 'climate change', and 5th was 'U.S. presidential election'.
In the domestic book search category, Han Kang, the Nobel Literature Prize-winning author, ranked 1st with 'The Vegetarian', and the movie 'Pamy?' took the top spot in the film category. In recipe rankings, the order was 'Eonam Teacher (Ryu Soo-young) recipe', 'Chestnut Tiramisu (Black & White Chef)', 'Dookki (Tteokbokki) recipe', and 'Nabak Kimchi'.
In the global overall search category, 'Copa America' ranked 1st as the search term of the year. Following were 'UEFA European Championship' and 'ICC T20 World Cup' in 2nd and 3rd places respectively, showing high interest in sports overseas.
