Chungnam Province Signs Agreement with Hyundai Oilbank for High-Quality Recycling of Waste Vinyl
Waste vinyl that has previously been incinerated is now expected to be reborn as airplane jet fuel and other products.
On the 11th, Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province, signed a business agreement for high-quality resource recycling of waste vinyl with companies such as HD Hyundai Oilbank and Hanwha TotalEnergies in the main conference room of the provincial government building. Cheonan, Asan, Seosan, and Dangjin also participated.
This agreement is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting recycling, such as producing pyrolysis oil using waste vinyl.
Cheonan and the three other local governments will collect waste vinyl separated at households through a dedicated collection system. Recycling companies will then produce pyrolysis oil, and HD Hyundai Oilbank and Hanwha TotalEnergies will use this to produce naphtha, a plastic feedstock, and jet fuel.
Pyrolysis is a technology that produces pyrolysis oil and gas, such as feedstock (naphtha) or fuel (kerosene, diesel), by indirectly connecting waste plastic (waste vinyl) in an oxygen-free environment.
The province expects that this technology will emit less air pollutants and greenhouse gases compared to incineration.
As of August this year, Cheonan and the three other cities collected 2,826 tons of waste vinyl through the living resource recovery center, of which 2,540 tons were made into solid refuse fuel (SRF) and incinerated at cement factories for use as thermal energy.
