Medical School Professors and Students Urge University President to Suspend Medical School Freshmen Recruitment
"Preventing the Collapse of Medical Education Sites"
Medical students and faculty organizations have demanded that the presidents of 40 medical schools nationwide halt the admission process for new medical students next year.
The Korean Association of Medical Students (KAMS) issued a letter on the 9th addressed to the presidents of each school with medical colleges and medical graduate schools, stating, "To prevent the collapse of medical education, we earnestly request that you suspend the recruitment of new students for the 2025 academic year based on your last conviction and conscience as educational institutions."
They added, "The foundation of the medical community will quickly collapse due to the production of incompetent doctors, and the resulting damage will be borne entirely by future generations of citizens," emphasizing, "Universities have the duty to prevent this."
They further appealed, "Even if the government feigns irresponsibility, we ask for a decisive action," calling it "the last chance to prevent the collapse of medical education."
The National Emergency Committee of Medical School Professors (Jeon-ui-bi) also released a statement on the same day, urging medical school presidents to "stop announcing early admission results and regular admission applications, and urgently discuss a substantial reduction in enrollment quotas."
Jeon-ui-bi stated, "Despite the impeachment crisis, the medical school admissions process triggered by Yoon Seok-yeol's absurd medical school expansion bomb is still proceeding smoothly," warning, "If this continues unchecked, Korean medical education and university hospitals will face ruin."
The professors listed the names of the presidents of 40 universities with medical schools in their statement, emphasizing, "If the presidents passively allow the medical school admissions process to proceed as is, they will become collaborators of Yoon Seok-yeol."
They also warned the Ministry of Education, saying, "The authority to select new students lies with the universities," and urged, "Do not infringe on university autonomy any further."
