Coast Guard Agency Lifts Enhanced Border Duty... Returns to Normal Operations
The Korea Coast Guard announced on the 4th that it has lifted the enhanced alert duty measures following the lifting of martial law. The Coast Guard restored normal duty from 4:30 a.m. that day by lifting the enhanced alert duty measures.
Earlier, Commissioner Kim Jong-wook of the Coast Guard instructed all patrol vessels and stations nationwide to strengthen maritime surveillance starting at midnight, following President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of martial law.
Additionally, he urged all commanders nationwide to maintain their assigned posts and conduct thorough situation management, and to keep an immediate response posture to prevent any inconvenience to the public or safety hazards.
A Coast Guard official stated, "After holding an emergency executive meeting at headquarters and a video conference with commanders nationwide, we implemented enhanced maritime surveillance measures, but with the lifting of martial law, we have returned to normal duty."
Earlier, President Yoon announced in an emergency address around 10:25 p.m. the previous day, "I declare martial law to eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the free constitutional order."
However, as the National Assembly convened a plenary session at 1 a.m. and passed a resolution demanding the lifting of martial law, the declaration was lifted around 4:27 a.m. through a live broadcast from the Yongsan Presidential Office.
