"US Defense Secretary Coordinates Japan Visit Next Week... Possible Visit to Korea"
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is coordinating a visit to Japan next week to hold a bilateral defense minister meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Kenta Nakata, Kyodo News reported on the 3rd, citing multiple sources.
According to sources, Secretary Austin aims to reaffirm the U.S.-Japan alliance, which will remain steadfast even after the presidential transition following Donald Trump's inauguration in January next year, and to promote enhanced cooperation in the security sector.
Kyodo News also reported that Austin may coordinate a visit to South Korea around the time of his Japan trip.
The agenda for the U.S.-Japan defense minister meeting is expected to cover responses to China’s hegemonic moves, North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons and missiles, and the situation in Taiwan.

Previously, Secretary Austin and Defense Minister Nakata held a bilateral meeting in Naples, Italy, in October during the G7 defense ministers’ meeting, and they also met in Darwin, northern Australia, in November.
