Trump Nominates Whitaker, Former Acting Attorney General, as Ambassador to NATO
Prospects for NATO Member Countries to Increase Defense Spending
President-elect of the United States Donald Trump nominated Matthew Whitaker (55), former Acting Attorney General, as the ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for his second administration, which will take office in January next year, on the 20th (local time).
In a statement on the day, Trump said, "Whitaker is a strong warrior and a loyal patriot who will promote and protect the interests of the United States." He added, "He will strengthen relations with NATO allies and stand firm against threats to peace and stability," and explained, "He will put America first."
Whitaker served as a prosecutor in Iowa before becoming Acting Attorney General in November 2018 during Trump's first term. He served until February of the following year when William Barr was appointed Attorney General.

After Senate confirmation, Whitaker is expected to push for increased defense spending by NATO member countries, as Trump repeatedly advocated during his candidacy. He is also expected to play a role in the resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
