Busan Global City Foundation and Korea International Cooperation Agency Hold Busan Development Cooperation Forum
‘Exploring Common Roles of ESG Implementation and Urban ODA’... Invitation of Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Experts
Commemorating the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) of the UN Plastic Pollution Treaty
Busan Global City Foundation (CEO Jeon Yong-woo) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (Chairman Jang Won-sam) will hold the "9th Busan Development Cooperation Forum" on the 19th at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 2 in Busan.
This year's forum theme is "Glocal ODA Viewed through Sustainable ESG and Environment." To commemorate the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) of the UN Plastic Pollution Treaty being held in Busan, the forum will discuss the direction of ODA for Busan as a global hub city proactively responding to the global environmental crisis.
The forum is organized to seek ODA promotion strategies aimed at addressing environmental issues faced by cities in the international community, including Busan, and achieving green growth based on public-private partnership ESG.
Through the opening keynote speech (Jae-sung Kwak, Professor at Kyung Hee University Graduate School of International Studies), international development strategies for sustainable urban development will be examined. The two subsequent regular sessions will respectively present the Korean government’s ESG and ODA project promotion trends, and Busan’s ODA promotion foundation in the environmental sector along with corporate case studies. The comprehensive discussion concluding Regular Session 2 (Chair: Kyung-sik Choi, Professor at Silla University / Chair of Busan Sustainable Development Committee) will bring together experts from public and private sectors to explore Busan’s ODA project direction for carbon neutrality and green growth, as well as partnership strategies for public-private cooperation.
In particular, a special session commemorating the hosting of INC-5 in Busan has been prepared. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will introduce the status of plastic pollution response through a circular economy and international community trends, with a video congratulatory message from the International Environmental Technology Center (Director: Takehiro Nakamura) and direct attendance by specialists. The following presentations will also cover ways for domestic cities to explore entry into the ODA sector by utilizing green financial resources.
Jeon Yong-woo, CEO of the foundation, emphasized, “With the world’s attention focused on Busan as a global hub city due to hosting INC-5, it is necessary to actively respond to the era’s demand for Busan to achieve mutual development with partner cities, using environmental agendas including plastic pollution response as an opportunity.” He added, “We will actively pursue continuous ODA project discovery and cooperation with the international community through this forum.”
