"Try It This Way"... Increasing Club Head Speed
Golf.com Reveals Off-Season Methods to Improve Driving Distance
PGA Pro Elliot's Club Head Speed Enhancement Techniques
Towel, Band, Speed Stick Training Exercises
The dream of amateur golfers is distance. Even if the score is bad, hitting the ball far with the driver boosts confidence. To secure distance, strength, speed, and balance are necessary. Among these, clubhead speed is crucial. Increasing this speed is essential to achieve the desired distance. Recently, Golf.com in the U.S. introduced training methods to improve clubhead speed for weekend golfers.
Training to increase club head speed during the off-season can help increase driving distance.
View original imageMost amateur golfers want to increase their clubhead speed as much as possible. They believe it to be a ‘magic’ for hitting long tee shots. However, this is not entirely true. Swinging faster does help increase distance, but if the swing is not controlled, it can lead to worse results.
Simply gripping the driver tightly, biting your lower lip, and attempting a swing can cause mistakes. Training to maintain everything in order is important. Brendan R. Elliott, a PGA golf professional, presented the correct methods needed to increase swing speed. He emphasized, "Don’t go to the driving range and hit balls repeatedly. First, do various training exercises at home to increase clubhead speed."
First is the Towel Snap Drill. Hold a small towel twisted as if holding a golf club. Take a normal stance and swing naturally. The goal is to snap the towel at the lowest point of the downswing. Quickly bend your wrist inward and flick it. You will feel the speed increase at the right moment. At the same time, it helps develop the sense of hinge and release moving side to side. You can do towel training in the living room without the risk of breaking anything.
Next is Resistance Band Training. Most people associate resistance bands only with physical therapy or recovery. However, they are also excellent equipment for increasing clubhead speed. They are inexpensive and can be used at home or even in hotel rooms while traveling. Attach the band to something sturdy like a door handle or bedpost. Take your usual golf posture and pull the band as if swinging a golf club. This develops the muscles related to the swing, increasing swing speed.

Finally, Speed Stick Training. At golf practice ranges, you can easily see golfers using speed sticks. There are various types. Using swing training aids like The Stack System is ideal. You can verify the increase in clubhead speed through an app. Putting effort into accessing the training program can yield good results. Elliott said, "Teen students experienced incredible results through these three training methods. Some students increased their distance by more than 25 yards in just a few months."
