Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, "We Will Strive to Improve Road Environment to Ensure Pedestrian Rights"
134 crosswalks in Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Gang-su) have been improved to be more pedestrian-friendly, receiving positive feedback from residents.
In May 2024, Mapo-gu conducted a full survey of 410 crosswalks throughout the district to ensure safe passage not only for wheelchair and stroller users but also for general pedestrians, selecting 134 locations where curb lowering was urgently needed.
Starting in June, major improvement works began on the selected sections. Priority was given to areas with heavy foot traffic such as near subway stations, schools, and apartment entrances to enhance residents' safety.
Additionally, since safety accidents such as falls can occur when snow obscures the height differences at crosswalks, Mapo-gu completed all construction before the start of winter in November.
The improved curbs and gutters at the crosswalks cover approximately 1,640 meters, and the pavement area amounts to 4,517 square meters.
Mapo-gu plans to continuously inspect the pedestrian environment of all crosswalks in the area and make improvements so that residents can use them without inconvenience.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “Pedestrian rights are the rights for pedestrians to walk safely and comfortably, and are among the fundamental human rights. Mapo-gu will spare no administrative effort to improve road environments to expand pedestrian rights for Mapo residents.”
