Mapo-gu Applies for National Registered Cultural Heritage Designation of Late President Kim Dae-jung's Donggyo-dong Residence
November 12 Submission of National Registered Cultural Heritage Registration Application to Seoul Metropolitan Government Cultural Heritage Preservation Division
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, "We will do our best for the systematic preservation and management of the Donggyo-dong residence"
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) submitted an application for the registration of the late President Kim Dae-jung's Donggyo-dong residence as a National Registered Cultural Heritage to the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Cultural Heritage Preservation Division on November 12 and requested prompt processing.
Prior to this, on October 21, 2024, Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, personally visited the National Heritage Agency to urge the designation of the Donggyo-dong residence as a temporary National Registered Cultural Heritage.
The following day, October 22, the 'Residence Preservation Challenge' was launched to garner interest and consensus from local residents and political figures. Meetings were held with the residence's purchaser to discuss registration as a National Registered Cultural Heritage, emphasizing the historical significance and importance of preserving the residence.
In response, the purchaser expressed deep sympathy for Mapo-gu's efforts and determination to preserve the residence and indicated willingness to cooperate with the registration. On October 30, the purchaser submitted a consent form for cultural heritage registration to Mapo-gu.
Additionally, on November 11, Kwon No-gap, Chairman of the Kim Dae-jung Foundation, Moon Hee-sang, Vice Chairman, and Bae Ki-seon, Secretary-General, visited Mapo-gu to discuss the preservation of the residence.
On that day, Mayor Park Gang-su of Mapo-gu and representatives of the Kim Dae-jung Foundation promised to promptly establish a promotion committee for the preservation of the late President Kim Dae-jung's residence and agreed to actively promote the purchase of the residence.
Mapo-gu plans to spare no administrative effort to ensure that the Donggyo-dong residence is promptly designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage and can subsequently serve as a memorial hall.

Mayor Park Gang-su of Mapo-gu stated, “Preserving the Donggyo-dong residence, which holds high historical, cultural, and educational value, so that everyone can enjoy it and it can be passed on intact to future generations is a natural duty of the nation and local governments. Mapo-gu will do its utmost to ensure that the Donggyo-dong residence is registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage and that systematic preservation management is carried out.”
