Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, will tour two countries, including Peru (Lima) and the United States (Los Angeles), where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit will be held from the 14th to the 20th.
Through this visit, Governor Lee will internationally promote Korea as the next host city of the 2025 APEC, explore cultural, scientific, technological, and economic development plans, strengthen international status, and carry out various activities to expand global cooperation.
Governor Lee will participate in the 2024 APEC Summit held in Lima, the capital of Peru, as a special aide to President Yoon Seok-yeol, becoming the first metropolitan government head to do so.
By attending this summit, Governor Lee aims to strengthen the close cooperation system between local and central governments and use this opportunity to expand Gyeongbuk Province’s role in the global economy and international relations.
In particular, Governor Lee plans to seek global cooperation opportunities related to Gyeongbuk’s key policies such as future mobility, eco-friendly energy, bio-industry, and the TK New Airport, and to explore ways to grow into a global economic hub based on the local government issue of TK integration.
Additionally, during the APEC Summit, he will promote Gyeongbuk Province and Gyeongju, the host of next year’s APEC, leveraging Gyeongju’s strengths as a city of historical culture to launch activities aimed at a renaissance of Gyeongbuk tourism.
Furthermore, Governor Lee will hold meetings with Korean companies operating in Peru, including POSCO International, Dohwa Engineering, Korea Zinc, Samsung C&T, OCI Trading, and Hyundai Construction, to understand industrial trends in South America and seek ways to revitalize the economy by linking APEC with regional industry cooperation related to Gyeongbuk Province.
The Gyeongbuk delegation will move from Lima to Los Angeles on the 17th, and on the following day, the 18th, they will visit NGL, a logistics company in the U.S., to directly explore the application of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in trucking, and hold meetings to find ways to connect advanced logistics technologies with Gyeongbuk’s industries.
They will then attend a meeting with the Federation of Korean Associations in the Americas to find measures to support Gyeongbuk’s small and medium-sized enterprises entering the U.S. market by utilizing the 2025 WKBC USA (World Korean Business Convention in USA) and the network of overseas Korean businesspeople.
In the afternoon, through a dinner meeting with Gyeongbuk’s overseas advisory committee members, they will strengthen Gyeongbuk’s international network and discuss international promotion and cooperation plans using science and technology and the Korean Wave for the successful hosting of next year’s APEC.
