EGIYON "Leading Shipping Carbon Neutrality with Green Ammonia Technology"
The Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) will collaborate with Samsung Heavy Industries to develop cost-reduction technologies for green ammonia production.
KETEP announced on the 13th that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung Heavy Industries at its headquarters in Daejeon regarding this initiative.

Based on the agreement, the two organizations plan to develop technologies to reduce the production costs of green ammonia used as ship fuel and to commercialize technologies that safely utilize the toxic ammonia.
Previously, KETEP achieved domestic firsts such as synthesizing liquid ammonia at low pressure below 50 bar and low temperature below 400 degrees Celsius, supported by basic research projects and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, demonstrating top-level domestic technological capabilities.
Recently, they have been researching zero-emission capture technologies and recycling technologies that prevent toxic ammonia from being released into the atmosphere during the capture process, enhancing usability.
Samsung Heavy Industries will conduct demonstrations to apply KETEP’s technologies to ships. Through this, they aim to commercialize ammonia-powered ships and lead the ammonia-powered ship market.
Samsung Heavy Industries is developing and advancing fuel supply systems necessary for ammonia-powered ship applications by establishing an ammonia demonstration facility on a 400-pyeong site at the Geoje Shipyard. Additionally, they have been recognized for their technological capabilities by obtaining the world’s first concept approval (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a “floating blue ammonia production facility.”

Lee Chang-geun, President of KETEP, stated, “Low-cost clean ammonia production and safe utilization technologies are essential to respond to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s greenhouse gas regulations. Through cooperation with Samsung Heavy Industries, we will lay the foundation to open the era of carbon-neutral ships.”
