Samyang Corporation to Exclusively Supply Alternative Sweetener Allulose to Australia and New Zealand
Local Food Standards Agency Approves Novel Food
First Domestic Company... Local Sales Permitted
Samyang Corporation is the first among domestic and international allulose producers to enter the Australian and New Zealand markets. Allulose is a rare sugar found in nature, with about 70% of the sweetness of sugar but low calories, making it an alternative sweetener. Its taste is similar to fructose, and when heated, it caramelizes like sugar to add flavor.
On the 13th, Samyang announced that it recently received 'Novel Food' approval from the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), recognizing allulose as a safe food ingredient for sale in each country.
Novel Food, introduced in the European Union (EU), Canada, Oceania, and other regions, is a term referring to a new concept of food. It denotes materials that were not previously used as food ingredients but have been recognized as safe and started to be used as food ingredients. Samyang is the first to obtain Novel Food approval for allulose in Australia and New Zealand.
Samyang began preparations for Novel Food approval in November 2021. With this approval, allulose is recognized locally as a food ingredient and can be used more freely in manufacturing reduced-sugar or no-added-sugar products, unlike high-intensity sweeteners or sugar alcohols such as aspartame, sucralose, and erythritol, which are classified as food additives.
Samyang plans to discover local customers and supply allulose under its B2B allulose brand, Nexweet. The Australian food market is growing, with increasing demand for low-sugar, low-fat, and organic-related products. In New Zealand, demand for products free of specific ingredients such as gluten and nuts is rising, creating expectations for growth in the low-sugar market.
