"Designation of Hubakje Day, Need to Create a Large-Scale Festival"
Jeonju Pride... Utilizing 'Historical and Cultural Resources'
Raised at Seminar Hosted by Later Baekje Citizens' Alliance
The Later Baekje Citizens' Coalition (Representative Jo Sang-jin) held a seminar titled 'Designation of Later Baekje Day and Promotion of King Gyeon Hwon' on the 7th at the Korean Traditional Culture Center in Jeonju, Jeonbuk. During the seminar, there was a proposal to designate 'Later Baekje Day' to restore pride in Jeonju, the royal capital of Later Baekje, and to create a large-scale festival utilizing historical and cultural resources.
Dr. Jang Chung-hee (Research Fellow at Jeonbuk Research Institute), who gave the keynote presentation, emphasized, "The historical and cultural resources of Later Baekje are Jeonbuk's historical treasures," and urged, "Let's leap forward as the center of the historical and cultural zone through the revitalization of Later Baekje."

Among these, it was argued that a specialized research institution related to Later Baekje should be established within the province, and a support system should be prepared for research and human resource development.
Research Fellow Jang proposed developing storytelling content and public-friendly programs to increase public awareness, and suggested establishing a linkage system connecting the Baekje cultural zone, Later Baekje cultural zone, Mahan cultural zone, and external cultural zones (China's Wuyue) for the construction of a linked historical and cultural zone.
He emphasized that a large-scale festival is needed as a powerful content that comprehensively represents Later Baekje, and that a commemorative day linked to this should be designated to enhance the image of 'Jeonbuk (Jeonju) = Later Baekje.'
The comprehensive discussion was chaired by Director Song Hwa-seop (Honam Cultural Contents Research Institute) and included Professor Lee Do-hak (Korea National University of Cultural Heritage), Councilor Lee Bo-soon (Jeonju City Council), Director Jo Young-ho (Namhae Tourism and Culture Foundation), Education Director Lee Cheol-woo (Later Baekje Promotion Association), and Deputy Director Lee Jong-geun (Saebyeonbuk Newspaper).
Professor Lee Do-hak stated, "Later Baekje played a bridging role in transitioning from a closed society centered on a small aristocracy to a merit-based society with broader participation," and identified special commemorative dates for Later Baekje Day as the uprising day (889), the entry into Jeonju (900), and the Battle of Gongsan (927), where the Goryeo army was annihilated.
Councilor Lee Bo-soon expressed, "Later Baekje Day is necessary to promote the historical significance of Later Baekje domestically and internationally," and added, "I will support the enactment of ordinances and research funding for this purpose." Director Jo Young-ho added, "Strengthening storytelling centered on King Gyeon Hwon and focusing on tourism routes around the palace site are important."
Additionally, Education Director Lee Cheol-woo mentioned elevating the founding spirit of Later Baekje to a civic spirit through ▲ designation of Later Baekje Day ▲ construction of a shrine for Gyeon Hwon ▲ Later Baekje historical and cultural festival ▲ publication of Geominjeong textbooks ▲ establishment of a Later Baekje historical and cultural research institute in universities ▲ restoration of Bongrimsa Temple Site in Wanju ▲ formation of a special committee in the city council ▲ landmarking of Donggosanseong Fortress. Deputy Director Lee Jong-geun also proposed, "Let's utilize the peacock fan (Gongjakseon) used by King Gyeon Hwon as a cultural product."
