Kim Dong-yeon "In the Trump Era, Change Must Start with President Yoon"
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon advised that with Trump winning the U.S. presidential election, South Korea urgently needs practical diplomacy more than ever, and for this, President Yoon Seok-yeol must change first.
On the 7th, Kim Dong-yeon posted on his social media (SNS), "I sincerely congratulate Trump on his victory," and expressed hope that "the Korea-U.S. alliance will develop beyond a value-based alliance into a future-oriented ‘innovation alliance.’"
He continued, "Now South Korea must face a completely different America," warning that "involvement in the Ukraine war and continuing hostile inter-Korean relations will only lead to self-isolation in the international community."
In particular, he expressed concern, saying, "With the rise of America First, the very framework of the international economic order will rapidly change," and added, "I worry whether our government is prepared."
Furthermore, he said, "With lame-duck conditions weakening negotiating power, the response has been utterly inadequate," advising, "Now we must change our thinking 180 degrees. We need to shift from selective diplomacy and ideological diplomacy to national interest diplomacy."
He also emphasized, "We must swiftly respond to changes in the international economic order, such as countering tariff barriers, diversifying supply chains in advanced industries, and diversifying international trade," stressing, "Practical diplomacy is urgently needed now, not ‘giveaway’ diplomacy."
