Seo Taegun Chairman's First Press Briefing
"Actively Supporting the Privatization of Rating Classification"
Seo Taegun, Chairman of the Game Rating and Administration Committee, stated that "we will reduce the perception gap between the industry and users regarding game rating reviews."
At a press conference held on the 6th at the CKL Corporate Support Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, Chairman Seo introduced the new slogan of the Game Rating and Administration Committee, "A More Approachable Game Committee, A Better Game Ecosystem," and made these remarks.
Chairman Seo emphasized the role of game users, announcing plans to expand user participation in the rating classification process and to introduce AI to enhance the reliability of game rating classification and post-management.
He said, "I realized that game users play an important role in the industry ecosystem," adding, "Since being appointed as the head of the Game Committee, I have been seeking ways to reflect the voices of the industry and users to restore trust and strengthen transparency."
Accordingly, the Game Committee plans to revise related regulations to allow user participation in the ongoing research to improve rating classification standards, and to incorporate users' opinions in the advisory committee for reclassification and post-management. Furthermore, it will actively promote the transfer of rating classification to the private sector and prepare a standard manual that can be easily used in the private sector.
He stated, "Through amendments to the Game Industry Act, it is necessary to transfer games rated as restricted for youth to the private sector," and added, "We will cooperate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to support the legal amendments."
The Game Committee plans to enhance the efficiency of game rating classification and post-management using AI starting in 2025. By adopting AI technology, it aims to improve the speed of game reviews and assist with rating classification and monitoring tasks previously handled by humans. Chairman Seo explained, "AI will shorten the time required for rating classification and increase the reliability and transparency of game management."
On the same day, Chairman Seo announced the establishment of the ‘Game User Rights Protection Center’ to safeguard the rights of game users and stated that communication forums with users will be held semiannually to listen to their opinions. Through this, the Game Committee plans to protect users' rights and promote mutual understanding between the industry and users.
Additionally, the committee plans to expand its cooperative network with the International Age Rating Coalition and Asian countries, and to conduct in-depth research on overseas rating classification cases to establish a domestic rating classification system that meets global standards.
Chairman Seo also addressed the recent constitutional complaint filed by more than 210,000 game users against Article 32, Paragraph 2, Subparagraph 3 of the Game Industry Promotion Act, which prohibits the distribution of games that may disrupt social order. He said, "We respect the opinions of those who filed the constitutional complaint and will prepare follow-up measures based on the Constitutional Court's decision." He added, "As discussions on fairness with other cultural arts such as films are actively taking place, we will also strengthen exchanges with related institutions."
