Seongdong-gu Improves Traffic Safety Facilities at 36 Child Protection Zones
Improvement of Traffic Safety Facilities in School Zones Including Gyeongdong Elementary School to Prevent Traffic Accidents on Children's Commute and Create a Safe Walking Environment... Installation of Pedestrian Protective Fences and Yellow Carpet Sign Blocks Completed, Installation of 2 Unmanned Traffic Enforcement Devices and Replacement of 200 Crosswalks with Yellow Paint to be Completed by Year-End
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) announced that it will improve traffic safety facilities in school zones to prevent traffic accidents on children's commuting routes and create a safe walking environment.
This traffic safety facility improvement project aims to protect pedestrians so that children can commute safely and to encourage drivers to drive safely with heightened awareness within school zones. It targets 36 facilities in the district, including Gyeongdong Elementary School.
First, the district replaced or newly installed aged pedestrian guardrails in 10 sections to prevent vehicles from veering off and pedestrians from jaywalking.
At 32 crosswalk waiting areas within school zones, spaces were created where children can safely wait for signals, and yellow carpet sign blocks were installed to help drivers easily recognize children waiting at crosswalks.
Two new unmanned traffic enforcement devices will also be installed. The district plans to add unmanned traffic enforcement devices by the end of this year at Geumok Elementary School and Geumbuk Elementary School to prevent signal violations and speeding at high-risk accident points within school zones. This is expected to greatly help prevent traffic accidents involving children by encouraging drivers to reduce speed.
Additionally, to enhance visibility in school zones and ensure safe passage for both drivers and pedestrians, 200 crosswalks within the protection zones will be completely repainted yellow by the end of the year.
