Prosecutors Seek 12-Year Prison Term for Man in His 20s Who Fatally Hit Street Cleaner
The prosecution has requested a 12-year prison sentence for a man in his twenties who is accused of fleeing a DUI checkpoint and fatally striking a sanitation worker.
On the 1st, during the sentencing hearing for Mr. A (26), held at the Cheonan branch of the Daejeon District Court under Judge Ryu Bonggeun, the prosecution asked the court to sentence him to 12 years in prison for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (hit-and-run resulting in death), among other charges.
Mr. A is accused of driving under the influence and fatally hitting sanitation worker Mr. B (36), who was working on a road in Cheonan at around 12:53 a.m. on August 7.
Mr. A refused to take a breathalyzer test when the police arrived at the scene after receiving a report, and was arrested on the spot.
Mr. A claimed that the police did not accept his request for a blood test, but the police officer who testified as a witness stated, "I did not hear Mr. A request a blood test at the time of the accident," and added, "If I had heard such a request, there would have been no reason to ignore it."
The victim's attorney said, "The defendant claims he cannot clearly remember the circumstances of the accident, yet selectively remembers asking for a blood test. He has not offered a sincere apology and has only proposed a settlement, so we ask for a severe punishment."
In his final statement, Mr. A said, "I sincerely apologize to the victims."
