According to the government's "Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth for Coping with Climate Crisis," the city was designated as a preliminary candidate site last year and achieved excellent results among 39 basic local governments nationwide. As a result, Dangjin was finally selected for the "Carbon Neutral Leading City" contest on the 31st.
Dangjin City is home to large-scale thermal power plants and steel mills, making it the region with the highest carbon emissions in the country and the area most urgently needing transition to a carbon-neutral society.
To address this, Dangjin City has presented its "Dangjin Leading Carbon Neutrality" vision, aiming to reduce regional carbon emissions by more than 56% by 2030. The city proposed the 5G strategy, which includes Green Energy, Green Station, Green Tech, and Green Life.
Additionally, the city outlined plans to contribute to the national carbon neutrality goal, provide citizen benefits during project implementation, and pursue realistically achievable business plans, resulting in its final selection as a Carbon Neutral Leading City.
The city plans to establish and implement an annual carbon neutrality project plan in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport by 2030.
Dangjin Mayor Oh Seonghwan stated, "We will do our best to contribute to achieving the national carbon neutrality goal," adding, "Please watch closely as Dangjin City transitions to a carbon-neutral society in the future."
