Ulsan Office of Education Reflects on the Value of ‘Banguchon Petroglyphs’
Damoim Event Puppet Show and Special Lecture
Origin of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage
The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Chang-su) held various events on the 29th at the office auditorium to remind all staff of the value of the Banggucheon Petroglyphs (National Treasure No. 285).
Held as the October ‘Damoim’ event, the program included puppet shows, special lectures, and quizzes to encourage staff participation.
The Banggucheon Petroglyphs, engraved on the rock face of Daegokcheon in Eonyang-eup, Ulju-gun, vividly depict life from the late Neolithic to the early Bronze Age. They feature sea animals such as whales and seals, land animals like tigers and deer, as well as hunters and fishermen.
This event was organized to raise awareness of the value of the Banggucheon Petroglyphs and to pray for the preservation of ancient cultural heritage and its inscription as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
The puppet show “Watching Whales” by Heepumssi, a resident enterprise of Ulju Tourism Dure, reenacted the lives of Neolithic people, including a fisherman catching fish and seeing whales, a shaman painting whale images on rocks, and whale hunting, adding interest to the event.
Following this, a lecture by Lee Sang-mok, former director of the Ulsan Museum, highlighted the educational value of the Banggucheon Petroglyphs and helped deepen understanding of early human life and culture.
The ‘Goraegorae’ quiz, featuring multiple-choice questions, true/false quizzes, and three-line acrostic poems, encouraged staff participation and created a joyful atmosphere.
Han, a scholarship officer who hosted the event, said, “It was a time to once again reflect on the historical value of the Banggucheon Petroglyphs,” adding, “I want to continue to support preservation efforts with sustained interest.”
