Gwangju City "Six Candidate Sites Submitted for Resource Recovery Facility"
Seo-gu 1, Nam-gu 1, Gwangsan 4 Locations... No Sites in Dong-gu and Buk-gu
Final Decision Made After Feasibility Study by Site Selection Committee
Gwangju City announced on the 26th that a total of six candidate sites for the resource recovery facility (incineration) location were submitted by the autonomous districts. By district, there is 1 site from Seo-gu, 1 from Nam-gu, and 4 from Gwangsan-gu.
Gwangju City will officially proceed with the site selection process based on the Waste Facility Promotion Act for the submitted candidate sites. A secondary verification of application requirements and site conditions will be conducted based on the review opinions submitted by the autonomous districts, and the final ranking will be determined through a feasibility study by the Site Selection Committee.
The city has focused on promoting the eco-friendly facility by holding resident briefings by region and administrative dong together with the autonomous districts, conducting public promotions, and organizing study tours to advanced sites to improve resident acceptance. Additionally, three short videos produced in-house were posted on social networking services (SNS) to inform the public about the necessity and safety of the resource recovery facility.
Meanwhile, according to a survey titled "Acceptance of Installation of Municipal Waste Incineration Facilities Near Residential Areas" released by the Gwangju City Council’s Environment and Welfare Expert Committee on the 18th, more than half of respondents, 54.5%, answered that "acceptance is possible." This is a significant increase compared to the 36.6% approval rate in a survey conducted by Gwangju City in February last year, indicating an improved perception of the resource recovery facility among citizens. This is interpreted as the result of efforts by Gwangju City and the five autonomous districts to dispel misunderstandings about the resource recovery facility through meetings and resident briefings.
Jung Mi-kyung, Director of the Resource Circulation Division of Gwangju City, said, "This third round of applications will proceed in the order of 'district application first, then Gwangju City promotion,' and evaluations will be conducted based on the candidate sites submitted by the autonomous districts," adding, "We will ensure that the most appropriate candidate site is selected considering local conditions."
