Kazakhstan’s fossil fuel power generation capacity accounts for nearly 80%. More than half of the thermal power plants are over 30 years old, increasing the need for refurbishment and modernization. The Kazakh government, which declared carbon neutrality by 2060, also announced plans to build two nuclear power plants in the Ulken region. A national referendum on the introduction of nuclear power was held, with 71.12% of voters supporting the construction of nuclear power plants.
The visiting delegation toured Doosan Enerbility’s production facilities, including the nuclear factory producing the main reactor of the Korean-type nuclear power plant APR1400, the turbine factory producing 380MW-class ultra-large gas turbines for power generation, and the ammonia co-firing demonstration plant, to review Doosan Enerbility’s production capabilities.
Last year, Doosan Enerbility signed a contract worth 1.15 trillion KRW to build a combined cycle power plant in the southern Shymkent region of Kazakhstan. In June, during President Yoon Suk-yeol’s state visit to Kazakhstan, Doosan Enerbility signed cooperation agreements on joint development of Kazakhstan’s power generation industry with Kazakh state-owned financial and energy companies such as Samruk-Kazyna and Samruk-Energy, and also signed a business agreement to supply environmental equipment for thermal power plants.
