The Guri City Council in Gyeonggi Province (Chairman Shin Dong-hwa) announced on the 18th that it will hold a commemorative ceremony for Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day on the 29th.
Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day is a designated commemorative day aimed at raising public awareness of local autonomy and balanced development and sharing their achievements.
Last year, the Guri City Council became the first basic council nationwide to hold a commemorative ceremony for Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day, providing an opportunity to reflect on the meaning and value of local autonomy.
This year’s commemorative ceremony for Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day will be co-hosted with Guri City, the two wheels of local autonomy, and co-organized with the Guri City Residents’ Autonomy Council, offering an opportunity to enhance participation and communication among local residents.
The event will include not only the ceremony but also pre-performances and congratulatory performances contributed by the Ace Saxophone Club and the residents’ autonomy committees of each neighborhood. Various side events such as a promotional booth for the Residents’ Autonomy Council’s specialized projects and an experiential booth from the Resource Circulation Education Center will also be prepared.
Chairman Shin Dong-hwa said, “This commemorative ceremony for Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day is not just an event of the Guri City Council but is held together with Guri City and the Guri City Residents’ Autonomy Council, which makes its meaning even deeper. The Guri City Council, as a basic council, will serve as the foundation for further development and growth of local autonomy.”

Meanwhile, Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Day was established to commemorate the 9th constitutional amendment in October of the same year, which reinstated the direct presidential election system and local autonomy following the June Democratic Uprising in 1987. At the time of its establishment, it was called Local Autonomy Day, but on July 10, 2023, it was renamed to its current title.
