Sangyoung Park, Gwangju-si Council Member in Gyeonggi, Urges Active Response to National Infrastructure Projects
At the 1st plenary session of the 312th extraordinary meeting of the Gwangju City Council in Gyeonggi Province, Assemblyman Park Sang-young (Democratic Party) called for addressing the issues and preparing countermeasures regarding national infrastructure projects surrounding Gwangju City through a free speech.
Assemblyman Park emphasized, "Gwangju City has recently been seriously affected by national-level infrastructure projects, and there is a need for attention and proactive response."
He cited the Yongin Semiconductor National Industrial Complex water supply project and the installation project of the substation in Sangbeoncheon-ri, Namhansanseong-myeon, stating, "Although these projects are essential for national economic growth and regional development, the direct benefits are concentrated in other cities, while Gwangju City is left to bear the resulting burdens."
In particular, regarding the Ministry of Environment-led Yongin National Industrial Complex water supply project, which plans to supply a total of 800,000 tons of industrial water and whose water pipelines mostly pass through Gwangju City, he mentioned that public discussion at the Gwangju City level has been insufficient.
On the other hand, Hwacheon County, the second-stage water provider in Suwon, is taking active measures such as holding resolution rallies with residents, showing a contrasting situation.
Assemblyman Park also raised concerns about the installation project of the substation in Sangbeoncheon-ri, Namhansanseong-myeon, emphasizing the negative impacts on citizens' health and quality of life due to electromagnetic wave exposure concerns, deterioration of urban aesthetics, and destruction of the natural environment, and expressed worries whether building a substation in Gwangju to solve the power problems of Icheon and Seongnam is an imposition of unilateral sacrifice.
