On the 15th, North Korea blew up sections of the inter-Korean connecting roads on the Gyeongui Line and Donghae Line. After blocking the Gyeongui and Donghae railway lines in August, North Korea has now also destroyed the roads on these lines, completely severing land routes between the two Koreas. Since late last year, after Chairman Kim Jong-un defined inter-Korean relations as a 'hostile two-state relationship,' North Korea has been proceeding with the disconnection of land routes between the South and the North as part of this policy.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea scattered leaf mines near the Gyeongui Line road in November last year, planted mines on the Donghae Line in December, dismantled fences on the Donghae Line road in March this year, and removed streetlights on the Gyeongui Line road in April. Subsequently, in May, they removed railway rails and sleepers on the Donghae Line, took down streetlights on the Donghae Line road in June, removed railway rails and sleepers on the Gyeongui Line in July, and dismantled the Gyeongui Line train storage facility in August.
North Korea is expected to show the footage of the destruction of the inter-Korean connecting roads to its residents to incite hostility toward the South. This behavior is similar to the 'explosion show' of the Kaesong Industrial Complex inter-Korean liaison office about four years ago, which was used as a propaganda tool.
