Seoul Jung-gu to Recycle 6,000 Tons of Waste Sewing Fabric Annually into Solid Fuel
Utilization in Thermal Power Plants, District Heating Facilities, and More
Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong) announced on the 29th that it has started separate collection of waste sewing fabric from the 19th to recycle it, as it was previously processed together with general household waste.
Due to the nature of Jung-gu as a hub of the fashion apparel industry with about 1,000 sewing companies concentrated, the annual amount of waste sewing fabric in Jung-gu reaches approximately 6,000 tons. This is the largest amount among the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul, and measures have been prepared for efficient waste disposal and resource circulation.
The waste sewing fabric, collected separately from general household waste, is gathered through a dedicated gate for waste sewing fabric at the Seosomun Resource Recycling Processing Center and then transported to recycling processing companies to be reborn as solid fuel.
Hallasan Industry Co., Ltd., located in Pocheon City, was selected as the recycling processing company and is responsible for crushing the waste sewing fabric and converting it into solid fuel that can be used like fossil fuel. Solid fuel is mainly utilized in thermal power plants, industrial boilers, and district heating facilities.
District Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “This waste sewing fabric recycling project is a necessary policy for Jung-gu, where sewing companies are concentrated, and it will add great significance to the resource circulation and development of the fashion apparel industry. We will continue to promote various policies for sustainable resource management and waste reduction together with residents.”
