Due to the increase in medical school quotas, the competition rates for the so-called 'SKY' (Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University) medical schools have all risen in the 2025 academic year early admission process.
According to Jongro Academy on the 13th, the number of applicants for the medical schools of the three universities, which closed with Yonsei University the day before, was counted at 4,235, an increase of 542 (14.7%) from last year's 3,693.
Seoul National University increased from 1,215 last year to 1,288 this year, and the competition rate rose from 12.66 to 1 to 13.56 to 1. Korea University increased from 1,812 last year to 2,047 this year, with the competition rate rising from 27.04 to 1 to 30.55 to 1.
Yonsei University Medical School, which closed its early admission application the day before, increased from 666 to 900 applicants, an increase of 234. The competition rate rose from 10.57 to 1 to 14.29 to 1.
Im Seong-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy, said, "The competition rates for the medical schools of all three SKY universities have increased compared to last year," adding, "This is presumed to be due to the increase in medical school quotas leading to a tendency for applicants to apply confidently or ambitiously." He also added, "In regional areas, top-ranking students in school grades likely applied safely through the regional talent selection process."
Kim Byung-jin, director of the Etoos Education Evaluation Research Institute, analyzed, "It appears that aggressive applications were made due to the increase in recruitment numbers for regional talents and local universities."
