Established in 1968, the Samcheonri Briquette Factory was the largest factory in the country, producing about 300,000 briquettes per day during peak season and supplying them throughout Seoul. However, as briquette consumption sharply declined, briquette factories gradually closed, leaving only the Samcheonri Briquette Factory in Imun-dong, Seoul.
Due to noise and dust generated by the factory, local residents have increasingly demanded the factory's relocation. Discussions on relocating the briquette factory, located east of the Imun Vehicle Depot, accelerated especially with the promotion of the ‘Imun Vehicle Depot Complex Development’ project.
In May, a business agreement for the sale and efficient utilization of the Samcheonri Briquette Factory site was signed, marking the start of the land sale. Subsequently, in July, Dongdaemun-gu signed a land sale contract for the Samcheonri Briquette Factory site with Samcheonri E&E Co., Ltd.
On the 27th, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung visited the Samcheonri Briquette Factory to inspect the site before demolition and encourage the staff. The mayor said, “I deeply thank all the employees who stayed until the end at the site where machines operated for 56 years stopped, as well as the CEO of Samcheonri E&E Co., Ltd., who made a great decision to return the factory and site to the local community.” He added, “Just as Samcheonri briquettes kept Seoul citizens warm during winters in the past, we will do our best to ensure this site is reborn as a space essential to local residents.”
The district plans to conduct a soil environment assessment for pollution investigation and proceed with safe demolition. From January 2025, it will actively gather residents’ opinions through a ‘Utilization Plan Establishment Project’ for the construction of a public complex facility.
