The committee consists of 26 officials from the three institutions, with the district mayor and the two university presidents serving as chairpersons, and the vice mayor and the two university vice presidents serving as vice chairpersons.
About 300 people, including officials from Seodaemun-gu and the two universities as well as local residents, attended the agreement ceremony. The main contents of the agreement include establishing a cooperative system for the successful promotion of key projects in the Sinchon area and preparing regional development plans, as well as exploring ways to realize cooperative projects during the promotion of key projects.
The ‘Gyeongui Line Undergrounding Project’ is a large-scale urban restructuring project that involves undergrounding the 5.8 km section from Seoul Station to Gajwa Station on the Gyeongui Line and constructing residential complex hubs, medical specialized complex hubs, and joint cultural hubs on the secured idle land above.
The plan includes attracting medical-related industries linking Yonsei University, Severance Hospital, and Ewha Womans University, creating a new Daehak-ro to secure cultural functions, and establishing a compact city by strengthening the complex functions centered on railway stations.
Seodaemun-gu has already been promoting a feasibility study for the Gyeongui Line undergrounding and three-dimensional complex development since last year and has established a plan with high economic feasibility and strong potential for private investment attraction.
Additionally, through the organizational restructuring in the second half of the 8th elected term, the ‘Gyeongui Line Undergrounding Team’ was newly established, and a signature campaign reflecting the will of the residents is being carried out to fully commit to the project promotion. The district plans to submit a related proposal to the Seoul Metropolitan Government next month to have the ‘Gyeongui Line Undergrounding’ selected as a leading project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in December this year.
Mayor Lee Seongheon said at the agreement ceremony, “The Gyeongui Line undergrounding project will provide an opportunity for the Sinchon and Ewha areas to develop and shine more than in the past,” and added, “We ask for continuous support and encouragement so that the Sinchon-Ewha area can establish itself as a new growth hub in the northwest region of Seoul.”
Yonsei University President Yoon Dongseop stated, “Since the Gyeongui Line undergrounding project is an important opportunity for Yonsei University and the local community to grow together, we will do our best for its successful promotion.”
