Understanding North-South Language Differences: Why Is It Necessary... 2nd Cultural Exchange Forum
"Hope It Leads to an Opportunity for Community Restoration"
A forum will be held to explore the linguistic differences between the South and the North and to seek directions for the future restoration of the cultural community. It is the "2nd Inter-Korean Cultural Exchange Education and Forum," which will take place on the 10th of next month at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute announced on the 26th that following the first event held last month under the theme "Talking about North Korean Culture and Arts," this time they will address the languages of the South and the North.
Professor Han Sung-woo of Inha University will give a lecture on North Korean speech and North Korean linguistic culture these days, and Dr. Han Jung-mi will present cases of similarities and differences in the languages of the South and the North based on her experience in charge of Korean language education for North Korean defectors at Hanawon.
Dr. Seol Song-a, a writer of North Korean defector origin, and Seo Jae-pyung, chairman of the North Korean Defectors Association, will also share interesting stories about North Korean linguistic culture together.
Lee Hae-don, Director of Cultural Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "Although cultural exchanges between the South and the North have been limited due to division and linguistic heterogeneity between South and North Korea has deepened, language is an inherent part of our people who have shared a long history." He added, "We hope this event will serve as an opportunity for ethnic homogeneity and the restoration of the community."
