5.62 Million Viewers for Korean Films, 6.41 Million for Foreign Films
In July at the box office, Korean films attracted 5.62 million viewers, while foreign films drew 6.41 million viewers.
According to the "July 2024 Korean Film Industry Report" released by the Korean Film Council, Korean films recorded 5.62 million viewers and sales of 53.4 billion KRW in July. Mid-tier Korean films with break-even points around 2 million viewers were released consecutively. The market share of Korean films in terms of sales was 46.3%, and the share of viewers was 46.7%. This was 1.1 times the July average from 2017 to 2019 (5.2 million viewers) and increased by 69.0% (2.3 million viewers) compared to the previous year (3.32 million viewers). Foreign films attracted 6.41 million viewers and recorded sales of 61.9 billion KRW.
The Korean Film Council analyzed, "The traditional box office formula and distribution pattern, where the summer peak season is the harvest time for major Korean blockbuster films, has changed. In the last week of July, it was customary for tentpole films such as ‘Mogadishu’ (2021), ‘Hansan: Rising Dragon’ (2022), and ‘Smugglers’ (2023) to be released, but this year, the mid-tier film ‘Pilot’ was released, symbolically showing signs of change in the theater scene after the pandemic."

The top-grossing film in July was the animation ‘Inside Out 2’ (26.5 billion KRW / 2.77 million viewers). It recorded cumulative sales of 80.8 billion KRW (8.41 million viewers), ranking first among foreign film hits. The second place was ‘Escape’ (22.5 billion KRW / 2.38 million viewers), followed by ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ (13.8 billion KRW / 1.35 million viewers), and ‘Handsome Guys’ (12.1 billion KRW / 1.29 million viewers). In the independent and art film category, ‘Perfect Days’ ranked first with sales of 651.9 million KRW (69,811 viewers), and ‘John of Interest’ ranked second with sales of 315.24 million KRW (32,795 viewers).
